The European Economic and Social Committee (EESC) welcomes the European Commission’s announcement about the nuclear stress tests to be conducted across all nuclear power plants within the EU. However, the EESC regrets that the stress tests will remain voluntary and it would be desirable to give the Commission a stronger role to play in making sure all power plants in Member States are running safely.

The EESC is organising a public hearing on Preventive measures for the protection of children against sexual abuse. The aim of the hearing is to present and disseminate concrete examples of initiatives, campaigns and actions conducted by various international institutions and civil society organisations in this field.
The conclusions of the hearing will feed directly into the work of the study group that drafts the EESC opinion and into a concise compendium of examples of best practice that the EESC intends to publish.
Invitation to send best practice examples
We would like to invite civil society organisations and state agencies that deal with the sexual abuse of children to fill in the questionnaire.
The Committee intends to publish a collection of the responses alongside the opinion to illustrate the activities and good practice carried out in different Member States.
We hope that circulating information about activities and experiences in the EU will encourage civil society to take action, build expertise and create new links between stakeholders. Your contribution would be very much appreciated. Thank you in advance!

Greenhouse gas emissions decreased very sharply in 2009, by 7.1 % in the EU-27 and 6.9 % in the EU-15. These most recent results, compiled by the European Environment Agency (EEA), confirm estimates made by the EEA last year. This decrease was largely the result of the economic recession of 2009, but also sustained strong growth in renewable energy.

The scientific and technical guidance of the EFSA Panel on Dietetic Products, Nutrition and Allergies for the preparation and presentation of an application for authorisation of a health claim presents a common format for the organisation of information for the preparation of a well-structured application for authorisation of health claims which fall under Article 14 (referring to children’s development and health, and to disease risk reduction claims), or 13(5) (which are based on newly developed scientific evidence and/or which include a request for the protection of proprietary data), or for the modification of an existing authorisation in accordance with Article 19 of Regulation (EC) No 1924/2006 on nutrition and health claims made on foods. This guidance outlines: the information and scientific data which must be included in the application, the hierarchy of different types of data and study designs (reflecting the relative strength of evidence which may be obtained from different types of studies) and the key issues which should be addressed in the application to substantiate the health claim.

A study published today by DG Information Society and Media confirms that new and forward-looking common EU rules are needed to unleash the full potential of the Digital Single Market. Europe has acted in this field as early as 1995 with the Data Protection Directive and many of these first generation directives have proven to be beneficial to fostering the information society in Europe. But the findings of the study support the conclusions of the Digital Agenda for Europe on the need to modernise and harmonise further the legislative framework applicable to information society services in the Digital Single Market. According to the study, a series of gaps and inconsistencies appeared due to the rapid technological evolution and urgent EU action is necessary to allow the next generation of Europeans to turn their creativity into new services, growth and jobs.

Understanding national VET systems – their features, history and priorities – helps us to better coordinate European policies. But they can also serve as a source of inspiration for people working in the field across Europe.
If you are involved in VET-related activities, you will find plenty of information – organised by country, theme and comparative analysis – in the national reports, a product of the VET in Europe Project.
