Decision of the European Ombudsman closing his inquiry into complaint 694/2011/AN against the European Parliament

The background to the complaint

1. The complainant was a trainee journalist in the European Parliament’s Directorate-General for External Policies (“DG EXPO”) and was a beneficiary of a Robert Schuman scholarship. His traineeship was scheduled to last from 1 March to 31 July 2010.

2. On 12 April 2010, the complainant sent an e-mail (the “controversial e-mail”) to the general e-mail address of the European Parliament, in which he shared the news that the Criminal Section of the Spanish Supreme Court had acquitted five journalists who worked for a Basque newspaper which had been closed down by the police in 2003.
