2012-02-09 The Fifth Tübingen Conference on Linguistic Evidence will take place from 9 to 12 February 2012 in Tübingen, Germany.
Historical linguistics, sometimes referred to as diachronic linguistics, is the study of language change. It seeks to describe and account for observed changes in particular languages, reconstruct the pre-history of languages, and develop general theories about the history of words and speech communities.
In recent years, many researchers have sought to combine diachronic evidence with theoretical and methodological insights achieved in synchronic linguistics. The underlying idea is that cross linguistic data can provide firm evidence of the limits of possible human languages and rank with psycholinguistic evidence and other sophisticated quantitative methods.
The event will combine data-driven and theory-driven approaches to the study of language systems, language behaviour and language functions.

2012-02-09 The Eighth Italian Research Conference on Digital Libraries will take place from 9 to 10 February 2012 in Bari, Italy.
A digital library is a library in which collections are stored in digital formats and may be accessed either locally or remotely. This type of library has a variety of uses. For example, academic entities may make institutional books, papers, theses, and other works available to a wide audience with few restrictions. Archives may often make significant use of digital library methods and technologies.
Digital library systems are becoming increasingly mature and widely deployed. They not only have to give users effective and personalised access to information, but also now need to include legacy and cultural heritage documents. This calls for the ability to deal with compound objects in different media, and provide uniform solutions and methodologies across different cultural heritage institutions, while taking into account preservation, restoration and curation concerns.

2012-02-06 A workshop entitled ‘Water and wetlands in the Mediterranean’ will take place from 6 to 8 February 2012 in Agadir, Morocco.
The Mediterranean region is unique due to its very specific climate and long history of human use. With the advent of industrialisation, intensive agriculture, urbanisation, population pressures and legitimate health considerations, many wetlands were destroyed. During the twentieth century, the estimated loss of wetlands was as high as 50%. Many of the remaining wetlands have seen change and their natural roles have been reduced substantially.
The event programme will focus on six themes:
- water resources management in order to optimise wetland services (wetlands in the water cycle, pollution, allocation of water and irrigation, hydroelectric energy);
- adaptation to climate change and the role of wetland services (including those that help reduce desertification);
- maintaining wetland services and ecosystem health despite increasing human pressures (demography and urbanisation, tourism, land use changes, major infrastructures), with a focus on coastal areas;
- the cultural heritage of wetlands and their value for Mediterranean societies (seascapes and landscapes, archaeology, traditional practices, sacred sites, secular social events, eco and cultural tourism);
- achieving sustainable and long-term use of wetland natural resources in sectors such as agriculture, stock breeding, fishing, aquaculture, salt extraction and building materials;
- values of the biodiversity dependent on wetland ecosystems (including direct services to humanity, science and education).

Across the world there are plans for further exploration of the Moon both in national agencies and in the private sector. The Moon is increasingly seen as an important target for future exploration, providing new and unique opportunities for scientific research and yielding both cultural and economic benefits to those who participate.
Working and operating in the complex lunar environment and exploiting the Moon as a platform for scientific research and further exploration poses major challenges. Underlying these challenges are multiple fundamental scientific unknowns regarding the Moon’s surface, its environment, the effects of this environment and the availability of potential resources.
The workshop is an opportunity to explore the extensive and interdisciplinary research that has already been performed in the area of scientific preparation for exploration of the Moon and beyond and to make the case for further work.

2012-02-01 A conference on biomedical electronics and devices will take place from 1 to 4 February 2012 in Algarve, Portugal.
Biomedical research is often defined as basic research, applied research, or translational research conducted to aid and support the body of knowledge in the field of medicine. It can be divided into two general categories: the evaluation of new treatments for both safety and efficacy in what are termed clinical trials, and all other research that contributes to the development of new treatments. The latter is termed preclinical research if its goal is specifically to elaborate knowledge for the development of new therapeutic strategies.
The aim of the conference is to bring together researchers and practitioners from electronics and mechanical engineering, interested in studying and using models, equipments and materials inspired from biological systems and/or addressing biological requirements. Some of the themes that will be discussed are:
- monitoring devices;
- instrumentation sensors;
- systems and biorobotics;
- micro-nanotechnologies;
- biomaterials

2012-01-30 The First Workshop on Telemedicine on Obesity, Overweight and Eating Disorders will take place from 30 January to 4 February 2012 in Valencia, Spain.
Studies have shown that by the year 2015, approximately 2.3 billion adults will be overweight and more than 700 million will be obese. This is up from 2005, when 1.6 billion adults were estimated to be overweight, and 400 million obese. Obesity increases the risk of many health complications such as cardiovascular diseases, some types of cancer, osteoarthritis, hypertension, dyslipidemia, and hypercholesterolemia, and is associated with early death.
The workshop will highlight the use of technology-enhanced approaches in overweight and obesity treatment in clinical psychology and medicine. New results and proposals will also be presented.

2012-01-30 An event entitled ‘Material efficiency: providing material services with less material production’ will take place from 30 to 31 January 2012 in London, UK.
One-third of the world’s energy is used to make and shape materials. Economic development correlates with material consumption, but in a climate and resource constrained future, this model of consumption may be difficult to sustain. Factors such as the insecurity of supplies, scarcity of resources, international conflicts, and volatile raw materials prices, can also present challenges. The field of material efficiency helps meet these concerns, while delivering material services with less material production.
The conference will bring together researchers and stakeholders who are active in the field.
