The cooperation we have had in the EU is a success! You may think it is crazy and naïve to say so in times of crisis, turmoil, unemployment and insecurity across Europe. Still I want to say it today, on Europe Day, as we must dare to see things in perspective.

The European Economic and Social Committee (EESC) is currently preparing an own-initiative opinion to examine the potential added value of social/care farming, its advantages and constraints and provide, among others, an insight in the existing (and non) regulatory frameworks within which social farming initiatives are carried out.

Some of you might know that I come from producing sector – food – agriculture.
I have gone through learning, training and education by my organisation, from a producer orientated attitude and a regulated system with negotiations between farmers’ organisation and the state for food prices towards market orientation, to consumer orientations. I remember very well how we sometimes during 70-80s told consumers what they should buy to what we do. Today, we try to understand what the consumers want, what are the consumers’ needs.

This public hearing will count on contributions from the EU Commission, AGE – the European Platform of NGOs defending the interests of older citizens, a Voluntary Service and two senior citizens, who will talk about their experience. These inputs, together with the debate held during the hearing and the individual contributions from the Members of the SOC Section (who have been asked to identify examples of activities which are dependent upon or involve older people in their own Member State) will flow into the EESC opinion on the topic.

The effective implementation of a sustainable development strategy with clear inter-linkages between the social, environmental and economic pillars requires a renewed sense of urgency, ambition, policy coherence and accountability. The transition to a green economy is an integral part of this process, but it is also only a first step. The green economy should be viewed as an opportunity to create new economic models centred on respect for the environment, resource efficiency and social equity. Within this context and based on both the work of the EESC to date and on the discussions in Brussels on 2 May 2012, the following are recommended:
- Investing into an effective long term sustainable development strategy
- Adopting collective responsibility for the future

The sovereign debt crisis has put the European economy under pressure and has tested the foundations of the European Union. Fiscal consolidation must go hand-in-hand with new avenues for solidarity in order to set the course for sustainable recovery and growth. At stake is not only the well-being of the European citizens but also economic and social cohesion and, ultimately, political stability in Europe. The current crisis has set the stage for deeper fiscal and political integration of the Union.
In order to delve deeper into these important issues, the EESC is organising a High Level Conference titled The Sovereign Debt Crisis: Towards Fiscal Union in Europe? on Thursday 7 June from 9.30 am to 6.30 pm (with registration/coffee from 9 am).

Europe is democratic – this is my first message of today! Now we have a question of how democratic it is and how best we make democracy work…
Europe is an interesting political construction, and when we speak about democratic deficit we may also take into account that citizens of Europe do not have a chance to act as Europeans rather than simply as national voters. So when we speak of democracy in Europe we may need to think about the European demos.

The public hearing on “The role of women as drivers of a development and innovation model in agriculture and rural areas” will be held on 11 May, in the context of the meeting of the Section for Agriculture, Rural Development and the Environment (NAT)
The EESC opinion on this same topic – the drafting of which is currently underway – will aim to identify criteria and measures which can help women to unlock their potential as workers and entrepreneurs and drive innovation in agricultural and rural areas, with a view to promoting sustainable development and good quality jobs in these areas. The presentations and the ensuing discussion at the public hearing will feed into the ongoing work on this subject.
